1953

During the first televised Academy Awards ceremony in 1953, Bob Hope, the program's master of ceremonies, appeared genuinely flabbergasted to be named the recipient of a special Oscar.
Taking the podium, Hope thanked the Academy and explained that he had been hoping for such a moment for fifteen years. "Now I know," he declared, "how the Republicans feel!"

[Before Eisenhower's victory in the 1952 presidential election, Democrats (Roosevelt and Truman) had been in the White House for almost 20 years.]
