Despite having bet on Richard Nixon in the 1968 presidential election, Ann Landers, a lifelong Democrat, was at best ambivalent about his victory.
After receiving a check from a friend one day, Landers replied with the following note: "This morning I received your check for $100 -- your payment on the election bet. Enclosed is my check for $50. It was a half-assed election."
