"Al 'The Mad Hungarian' Hrabosky, the Charles Manson-looking reliever who was a star player for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals in the 1970s and the Braves in the '80s... used to stomp around behind the mound and scream at himself before slamming the ball into his mitt to conduct business. But the craziest pitch in his arsenal was the grenade he kept in his locker during the 1978 season. Hrabosky, an Army weapons-demolition expert, used the grenade to keep his Royal teammates motivated. 'There were a lot of stories about my lack of sanity,' Hrabosky said. 'Most of them were true.'"
