Franz Haydn visited Sir Joshua Reynolds in his studio one day shortly after the artist had completed a beautiful portrait of the soprano Elizabeth Billington in the character of Saint Cecilia (patron saint of music).
"I like the portrait very much but you have painted Billington listening to the angels," Haydn declared. "You should rather have made the angels listening to her."
