Clap of Thunder

"During a rehearsal for Macbeth at Her Majesty's, Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree found himself interrupted in full flow by an uncued clap of thunder. Shading his eyes with his hands he peered into the auditorium. In a frosty voice he said, 'When I require the assistance of our sound-effects department you may be sure I shall ask for it.' After a moment's pause a disembodied voice replied, 'I think you will find that was real thunder, Sir Herbert.' 'Ah,' Tree replied pensively, 'I thought it wasn't as good as ours.'"
