In March 1981, president Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest by a would-be assassin (John Hinkley, Jr.) as he left a Washington hotel. While recovering, he asked to be kept informed of the status of several others who had also been wounded, and was duly assured that their prognoses were good. "That's great news!" Reagan exclaimed. "We'll have to get four bedpans and have a reunion."
