One day in the mid-1960s, legendary LSD pioneer Timothy Leary decided to run for the governorship of California and asked the Beatles to write the campaign song. They agreed.
Ironically, no sooner had John Lennon written "Come Together" as an inspiring anthem than the campaign "fell apart" as a result of Leary's drug-related legal troubles.
[The development of LSD was considered so intriguing that the drug was nearly given its own pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair.]
