Jean Bailly, a member of the French Academy of Sciences, became the first mayor of Paris following the French Revolution in 1789. Soon thereafter, Robespierre's reign of terror ensnared him and he was sentenced to death.
While awaiting the guillotine, Bailly was heckled on the scaffold by a spectator who noticed that he was trembling. Replied Bailly: "Only from the cold, my friend."
