In 2003, Dave Morgan, known as The Hat, retired after 30 years as union leader of New Zealand's seafarers. Colleagues told the New Zealand Herald that Mr. Morgan's sartorial elegance was a psychological weapon. "When The Hat arrives," one man explained, "the boss has to start talking straight." Morgan offered a more pragmatic reason for the headgear: "I would've thought it pretty self-evident -- I'm bald as a badger."
