David and Victoria Beckham: monumental extravagance

With countless vehicles (including four Ferraris) and a luxurious 240-acre Hertfordshire estate (dubbed “Beckingham Palace” by the press) boasting such amenities as a $250,000 alarm system and a $35,000 projector to display images of the sun, moon, and stars on Brooklyn’s bedroom ceiling, David and Victoria Beckham earned a reputation for monumental extravagance. For the boys’ baptisms in December 2004, the Beckhams threw a $900,000 party featuring $140,000 worth of flowers. At Christmas, 5-year-old Brooklyn was given a $42,000 gas-powered mini-Hummer. David and Victoria also built a $230,000 miniature castle for the children (which was nearly torn down for lack of proper building permits). But the Beckhams did not splurge on everything – or did they? Victoria once chartered a private jet and flew to the south of France to hunt for some “discount furniture.” She found some – $460,000 worth.
