David Beckham once visited what was described to him as a “secluded beach” in Bangkok, Thailand. He soon arrived, and found a hundred fans waiting to meet him. It was also in Thailand, in 2000, that a fan paid him the ultimate tribute: placing a gold-plated foot-high statue of David at the foot of the main Buddha in Bangkok’s Pariwas Temple, in a spot reserved for minor deities, forcing monks in the monastery to kneel and meditate before his likeness.
