David Letterman's GQ cover shoot

GQ creative director Jim Moore: "In all my years working with Dick [photographer Richard Avedon] we never had a problem with any of the cover shoots. Except once. For the July 1984 issue, David Letterman showed up at the studio chewing gum. Dick asked him to remove it. Dave siad he would just hide it under his tongue, 'like the models do,' and no one would know. Dick said, 'Yes, Dave, but I'll know it's there. I really need you to take it out.' They went back and forth like this for a while, after which Dick walked up to him, shook his hand, said, 'It was nice meeting you,' and walked out the studio door. Dave looked stunned and said, 'That didn't just happen, did it?' Days later Dave returned to Dick's studio. There was no gum, and there was very little conversation. But we got our cover."
