While running through Death Valley one day, endurance runner Dean Karnazes discovered that he had to run on the white line. "I learned that the hard way," he recalled. "The soles of my first pair of shoes melted off!" During the same run, someone handed Karnazes a peanut butter and jam sandwich through the window of a support vehicle. "Why would they bring a toaster?" he asked himself. They hadn't. It was so hot (130 degrees) that the bread had toasted itself!
