While painting The Raft of the Medusa, Jean Gericault's masterpiece inspired by a nautical disaster which left several passengers from a wrecked ship adrift at sea, the painter endeavored to depict the grim incident with unparalleled accuracy. He studied dying men in the hospital, shaved his head, and locked himself in with corpses in a morgue.
