In 1993, the actor Ed Begley, Jr. -- a vegetarian who lives in a solar-powered home and drives around in an electric car -- became chief of the Los Angeles Environmental Affairs Commission. Commissioner Begley later quit his job, explaining that the commission was destroying trees with all the paper it was using!
