Fred Thompson was a senator from 1994 to 2003. He ran an impressive campaign, driving around Tennessee in a red pick-up truck and seducing voters with common-sense homilies. But when he arrived in the Senate, he found it arduous and dull. When the National Review asked him to name his most significant accomplishments during that period, he said: “You mean besides leaving the Senate?”
