Gayetty: Self-Deprecation?

In 1857, Joseph C. Gayetty's New Jersey company began to produce "Therapeutic Paper." The first packaged bathroom tissue in the United States, it contained an abundance of aloe, was sold in packs of 500 sheets for fifty cents, and, ironically, had Gayetty's name (though not his face) printed on every sheet.

[In 1391, China's Bureau of Imperial Supplies began producing 720,000 sheets of toilet paper per year. Each sheet measured two feet by three feet. Not until 1890 did the Scott Paper Company manufacture toilet paper in a roll. Scott's early advertisements claimed that more than 65% of middle-aged men and women suffer from some sort of rectal disease, and that "harsh toilet tissue may cause serious injury."]
