The mystic poet Paul Claudel once unsuccessfully attempted to convert the liberal-leaning Andre Gide to his Catholic faith. On February 19, 1951, Gide died. Several days later, a curious telegram, bearing Gide's signature, appeared on a bulletin board in the Sorbonne: "Hell doesn't exist," the notice read. "Better notify Claudel."
