Go East, Young Man?




In October 1863, after a successful lecture tour along the eastern seaboard, humor writer Artemus Ward headed West. Shortly thereafter, the manager of the San Francisco opera house cabled him to ask what he would take for forty nights in California. Ward's reply? "Brandy and water!"
