Humphrey Temperley tries to rescue food from some Germans

In 1997, Humphrey Temperley, deputy leader of the Somerset County Council, tried to intervene after food intended for a group of Czech dignitaries was mistakenly placed in a neighboring room where a group of Germans were being entertained. The response? "I was hit on all sides by people from the German reception," recalled Temperley (who played rugby at school). "I've never been tackled so hard as when I tried to make my way back with the food." Phil Smeed, a former British police officer, who fought for the German side, recalled: "I was hit by a shower of flying chicken legs as I went to investigate the rumpus. It was absolutely extraordinary behavior. Several people were in a shock, including a German lady who was hit in the face by a plate of chicken legs."
