Manure Spreader

During one of William Jennings Bryan's numerous presidential campaigns, he was invited to speak to a large crowd assembled in a field. Bryan climbed onto the manure spreader which had been enlisted to double as an impromptu stage.
"This is the first time I have ever spoken," Bryan wryly observed, "from a Republican platform."

[Bryan once compared his failures as a presidential candidate to a woman who was so fat that she had to leave the streetcar backward. She had tried three times to get off, he explained, but each time she was helped on again by someone who thought she was entering instead of leaving.]
