In 1954, Richard Nixon, then Vice President of the United States, wrote a note to his wife, Pat, promising never again to seek public office. After showing it to Pat, he folded it up and tucked it into his wallet. According to some accounts, Nixon still had this note in his wallet at the time of his inauguration.
["I may not know much," Lyndon B. Johnson once remarked of a Nixon speech, "but I know chicken shit from chicken salad."]
