During his monologue one evening "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien joked that Worldcom's CEO, the recently-busted corporate fraudster Bernie Ebbers, planned to use his "one phone call" to annoy someone at dinner time. The joke bombed.
"That was a smart joke," Conan declared, surveying the audience. "I'll never do one of those again!"

[After his monologue, O'Brien announced the evening's guests, among them Adam Sandler and musical guest Our Lady Peace. "And right over here," he said, pointing to drummer Max Weinberg, "Our Lady Max!"]
