Punning software?

In 2007, Julia Taylor and Lawrence Mazlack of the University of Cincinnati developed software that allows computers to recognize puns like the following: "A boy tells his mother that he has been in the garden so much because 'teacher told me to weed a lot.'" Though the software failed to recognize trickier constructions (eg: "A patient says, 'Doctor, doctor, I swallowed a bone.' 'Are you choking?' the doctor replies. 'No, I really did,' the patient replies.") researchers envision the day when computers surpass humans in theit ability to understand language.
