In 2007, Cyprus-born Australian artist Stelios Arcadiou had an extra ear, made of human cartilage, grafted onto his forearm. Although the ear does not function, the sexagenarian artist said he hoped to have a microphone implanted to allow others to hear what the organ would hear if it were real. Consulting surgeon David Gault said he hoped that publicity surrounding the operation would encourage people who are missing an ear to consider reconstructive surgery.
